Ethical Guidelines

Last updated: February 2026

These guidelines define the ethical principles that govern all operations of Missing From Eritrea. They apply to our team, volunteers, and all platform users.

Dignity and Respect

Every missing person is treated with dignity. We use respectful language, handle photos and personal information with care, and ensure that all published content honors the memory and humanity of the individuals and their families.

Non-Political Stance

Our mission is purely humanitarian. We do not take political positions, support political movements, or allow the platform to be used for political purposes. All cases are treated equally regardless of background.

Non-Attribution Policy

We document disappearances — not causes, not perpetrators. Missing From Eritrea records the fact that a person is missing and the family's experience of not knowing. We never state or imply who may be responsible for a disappearance. Information sourced from credible organisations is clearly attributed to its source. If you are a family member and wish to add information, update details, or request removal, please contact us.

Data Ethics

We collect only necessary information, store it securely, and never sell or misuse personal data. Reporter identities are kept confidential. Missing person information is published only with informed consent.

Responsible Reporting

All reports are verified before publication. We do not publish unverified information that could cause harm. When information is uncertain, we clearly indicate this. We correct errors promptly when discovered.

Community Standards

We foster a supportive community built on empathy, mutual respect, and shared purpose. Harassment, discrimination, or exploitation of any kind is not tolerated.

Accountability

We are transparent about our processes and accountable for our actions. If you believe we have violated these guidelines, please contact us at ethics@missingfromeritrea.org.
