Against all odds, the Gebremichael family found their missing brother through this platform. Their journey reminds us why we do this work.

When Yohannes Gebremichael's family received the call, they could barely believe it. After five years of searching, their brother had been found—alive and safe in a refugee camp in Ethiopia.
"We had almost given up hope," admits his sister, Tigist. "Five years is a long time. We had no information, no leads, nothing. But we kept his profile active on every platform we could find."
The breakthrough came through an unexpected connection. A volunteer working with Missing From Eritrea recognized Yohannes from a photo shared on the platform. The volunteer had recently visited the refugee camp and remembered seeing someone who matched the description.
"It took several weeks to confirm," explains the MFE team member who helped coordinate the reunion. "We had to verify identities, ensure it was safe for everyone involved, and navigate complex bureaucratic processes."
When the family finally video-called with Yohannes, there were no words at first—just tears of relief and joy. He had survived a perilous journey, spent time in detention, and eventually made it to the camp where he had been living for three years, unable to contact his family.
"The first thing he said was 'I never stopped thinking about you,'" Tigist recalls. "And we told him the same. We never stopped looking."
The Gebremichael family's reunion is rare but not impossible. It's a reminder of why documentation matters, why persistence matters, and why every profile we maintain could be the one that leads to a reunion.
"Don't give up," Tigist advises other searching families. "Technology has made the world smaller. Keep sharing, keep hoping, keep connected. Miracles happen."
