The Eritrean diaspora spans the globe—from Sweden to Australia, from the United States to Israel. In each country, communities form around shared experiences, shared language, and shared concern for those left behind or lost along the way.
"We left Eritrea for different reasons and by different paths," explains Mehretu, who now lives in Germany. "But we all carry the same weight of separation from family, from homeland, from people we love."
Social media has transformed how the diaspora stays connected and searches for the missing. WhatsApp groups, Facebook pages, and platforms like Missing From Eritrea create virtual communities that transcend borders.
"Before, if someone went missing during the journey, their family might never know what happened," says a community organizer in London. "Now, information travels faster. Someone in Sudan might see a post from someone in Europe and make a connection that leads to answers."
But technology also brings new challenges. Scammers prey on desperate families. Misinformation spreads quickly. And the constant stream of news about missing persons can be overwhelming for those already carrying their own trauma.
The diaspora's response has been to organize. Communities establish verification systems, create support networks for searching families, and advocate for better documentation and protection of refugees and migrants.
"We are spread across the world, but we are still one community," reflects an elder in a U.S. Eritrean community center. "When one of us is missing, we all feel it. When one family searches, we all search with them."
This collective approach—rooted in traditional Eritrean values of community support—offers both practical assistance and emotional sustenance. In the face of uncertainty, the diaspora's message is clear: no one searches alone.
